The Butterfly Cabinet

Butterfly2You know it’s going to be a good day when you start it off with a trip to The Butterfly Cabinet for breakfast. Undoubtedly one of the most popular cafes in Newcastle, The Butterfly Cabinet has been open since 2010 and each time I go, I wonder why I’ve left it so long since my last visit.

I’m always surprised at just how big it is inside. There is so much to look at and because it’s always so busy, it’s quite noisy with diners chattering away to each other – I love this. I do not enjoy dining in a library. Weird thing to say…

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, and The Butterfly Cabinet do it SO well. Today I had the USA breakfast, as did my friend (and frequent blog excursion buddy) Julie. Here’s a picture to whet your appetite.

Yep, this is large… Neither of us could finish it, but I could definitely eat a pancake right this minute. I don’t know what the butter was meant to accompany. Pancakes maybe? The syrup won that battle. The breakfast is so large that I couldn’t even fit my cup of tea (darjeeling if you’re wondering) into the photo. Or I didn’t even try. I’ll let you decide which.

As well as a huge breakfast menu (breakfast is served all day… woo!), there’s loads of yummy food to choose from for lunch – which is served from 11am onwards. You can check out their website here.

I love the quirky interior so much.. the mis-matched chairs, the bright walls, the beautiful ceiling and chandelier… I took a few photos so you can see what I mean. (I’m still getting used to whipping my big camera out. It’s harder than I thought it would be but I seem to be slowly getting over it. I’ve spent too long taking photos with my phone.)

butterfly6 butterfly7butterfly8 butterfly9 butterfly10The website says the venue is available for hire in the evening and catering services are available. They are fully licensed and can stay open late… Can someone have a party here and invite me please?

My cousin has never been before so we’re planning to visit in the very near future, I promise not to have the USA breakfast this time… I’m already settled on having Eggs Benedict/Florentine.  Even if we go at lunchtime I will have breakfast. I wish more places served breakfast all day. I wonder how many times I’ve used the word ‘breakfast’ in this post. I could count but I won’t.

It’s even pretty from the outside.butterfly11

If (like my cousin) you’ve never been to The Butterfly Cabinet, I suggest you rectify this pronto! Be prepared to queue though, it’s so popular that there’s often a line of hungry diners lined up outside waiting for a table… it’s definitely worth the wait. If you’ve been, I’d love to hear what you thought and what your usual order is.

LOVE the Butterfly Cabinet! I remember going back in the day when it was Belle & Herbs, and it’s just as good now as it was then (probs better). My usual breakfast order is the banana pancakes and either a smoothie (mixed berry) or if I’m feeling extra naughty a chocolate milkshake (topped with cream and Love Hearts, so cute!). Neeeed to go back soon *tummy rumbles*

  3. Ahh I remember the Belle & Herbs days too! You’re right, it’s better than ever now. I love how extensive the menu is, and they still have a full specials board too – impressive! Can’t wait for my next visit. My friend told me about a Turkish Delight hot chocolate… how good does that sound?!

  5. Breakfast foods are always the most delicious! The USA is so good and SO filling, although I still don’t know how I feel about having pancakes and sausages on the same plate. Next time I think I will have a full English fry up.

    1. I am so glad I coerced you into having the USA breakfast. It was necessary. Everyone needs to try it at least once ☺️ I’ll let you order whatever you want next time haha x

Whenever I walk past the Butterfly Cabinet I think to myself “I definitely need to visit there” (I never visited and I used to live 5 minutes away from here!) and your breakfast photos are making me drool! This summer I vow to visit for some breakfast! The photos are wonderful too 🙂
