1901 Caffe Bistro

1901 Caffe Bistro is located inside a beautiful church building on St. Georges Terrace, Jesmond. I never knew it was there, but it’s been open for quite a few years and was taken over by new owners last year.

1901 has recently undergone a refurb, I’d heard wonderful things from my friend who lives close by so we decided to head there for a much needed catch-up with one of our other friends.

When we walked in I was a bit shocked by how big it was – yeah I knew it was in an old church, but for some reason didn’t expect the caffe to be the only thing in there! It is honestly breath-taking, the light is absolutely beautiful and there’s so much to look at. We got the table in the corner in front of the window, with gorgeous (and comfy) old cinema seats.

We ordered and as expected I chose one of my favourites from the breakfast menu (breakfast is served all day) – eggs benedict. Julie ordered from the lunch menu and picked the chorizo melt. I didn’t get a photo of Emma’s sandwich but she ordered the cheese and apple sandwich, it was a proper doorstep sandwich. The eggs benedict were great, the hollandaise sauce was a touch more lemon-y than I was expecting but I really enjoyed it. The bacon was crispy but not hard and the yolks were perfect. I paid £10.35 for the eggs and my coffee. A couple next to us had ordered sausage baps, I’m definitely getting one of those next time. The menu has a nice selection to choose from and isn’t too long-winded. I appreciate this because otherwise I have trouble making my mind up (forever indecisive).

An hour-ish later, we ordered some more drinks and something sweet from the cake counter. Julie was about to order when a new cake was brought over to the counter… a gluten free carrot and courgette cake with nuts. It looked amazing so she instantly changed her mind and got a wedge of this. I ordered a raspberry and coconut slice and a deluxe hot chocolate. It was a tough call for me, the lemon curd slice also looked delicious.

Here come the dessert pics!

Absolutely loved the raspberry and coconut slice and the deluxe hot choc, who doesn’t like cream, maltesers and marshmallows?! I had a taste of the carrot and courgette GF cake and was a bit gutted I hadn’t ordered it, the victoria sponge was spot-on too.

Without realising, four hours had passed while we sat, ate, drank and chatted. The atmosphere is so relaxed that time just flew by! I love this place. There, I said it. I wish it was around the corner from me. I love all the quirky furniture, the copper lamps, fresh flowers in jars and that dogs are welcome.  Spike had a great time, they have dog treats at the front and lots of customers were cooing over him.

I took so many photos of the surroundings… I’ve tried to whittle my favourites down for this post…

I have never stayed at brunch for four hours, ever. I think this speaks volumes about how much I loved it here. I can see why it was busy in here the whole time we were there.
I had a chat with the owner who was rushed off her feet but also really friendly and chatty. All of the staff who served us were lovely too, I honestly have nothing bad to say about this place. I cannot wait to go back. It’d be lovely to sit outside – once the weather is warm enough!

I’d definitely recommend giving Caffe 1901 a shot if you’re in Newcastle. They’re open 10-6 Monday-Friday and 10-4 on Sunday. The website is currently being updated but I’ll amend this post and link to it once it’s done. Until then, you can find them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I would love to hear your thoughts if you’ve been or decide to pop in.

Bye for now!
